About Ellis Park Stadium
Although the Ellis Park Stadium was already a regular host of major sports matches (having first been constructed in 1928), it underwent a major renovation to accommodate the millions of international players and fans that came to South Africa for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.
Did you know? In addition to the games of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, Ellis Park also hosted the Rugby World Cup in 1995 (which South Africa won), as well as a number of other significant matches and events, including music concerts.
The Ellis Park Stadium is situated in Johannesburg, Gauteng, and is the venue of choice for rugby and football (or soccer) in the City of Gold. The renovations included adding new upper tiers behind each goal and expanding its seating capacity to 70 000 (from 60 000).
It is an open-air stadium with a traditional square shape (although the sides are somewhat curved, giving it more aesthetic appeal).
It is now equipped with state-of-the-art audio-visual and technical equipment, media facilities, access for the physically disabled, nine conference venues, executive suites, and banqueting facilities. These upgrades ensure that this is a world-class stadium that is ready for just about any gathering of people; whether for business, sport or entertainment.
Johannesburg is one of South Africa's busiest and best equipped metropolises. Visitors to this urban hub will have plenty of accommodation, tourist attractions, shopping malls, galleries and boutiques to add to their itinerary.
In addition, the OR Tambo International Airport is less than 30 minutes' drive from the stadium.
