The JMBC (Johannesburg Mountain Bicycle Club) is all about the fun and adventure of experiencing the outdoors, dirt and all, from the saddle of a mountain bike. Johannesburg is the capital city of the Gauteng Province and the landing base of millions of international tourists that are coming to experience the magic of South Africa. As such, it is usually renowned as the commercial and entertainment epicentre of the country. However, there are also many trails in and around the city (particularly the north) that are fabulous for cyclists.

The JMBC was established in 1989 and has, since then, continued to organise rides for beginners and pros alike. These take place every Sunday of the year (although extraordinary circumstances may mean that one or two cycles have to be postponed) and cover different areas. For this reason, the club does not operate from one particular base. So, all details and plans can be made from their website.

The rides that are common, or repeated, vary in length from about 30 to 42 km, and generally offer a variety of features that suit riders of different abilities. Of course, the shorter rides are best suited to families and beginners, while the tough rides test skills and endurance more. There are also moderate ones that offer a fine balance. Sometimes, longer rides are arranged for those that want to train for a race or improve their endurance skills.

The most popular rides are the

• Groenkloof Nature Reserve (about 30 km) – single track and forested sections as well as a coffee shop make this trail great for all.

• Krugersdorp Nature Reserve (about 35 km) – not very technical, but plenty of hills to ascend and descend. This trail goes past the lion reserve.

• Modderfontein Nature Reserve (about 40 km) – something for everyone, including a slick rock climb.

• Van Gaalen's Cheese Farm (around 42 km) – the end of the ride includes cycling along the Magalies River, which is nothing short of spectacular. In addition, there are some very challenging rocky switchbacks that require plenty of concentration.

Those taking part in these rides need to have their own mountain bike and helmet, and need to know the basics of how to ride.
