Amsterdamhoek, Port Elizabeth
On the banks of the Swartkops River, near its mouth, is Amsterdamhoek. This may be a suburb in Port Elizabeth, but it exudes all of the appeal of a fishing village in its own right. The homes here are, generally, rustic and fairly large (although many have been revamped or even rebuilt since the 1970's), most having beautiful views of the river. From many places, the waters of the Indian Ocean are also visible, creating magnificent backdrops.
Amsterdamhoek remains popular amongst fishermen, who love to bask on the river's banks, enjoying the warm South African sunshine and the vistas of the Eastern Cape. Along with them, there are often families playing in the warm river's waters, while the clear coastal air is bracing.
The suburb creates a feeling of being far from the city, even remote. Really, though, Amsterdamhoek is less than 10 kilometres from the heart of the city, and within a short drive from the many beaches that Port Elizabeth has to offer, as well as the shopping malls, historical attractions and natural areas.
