Viljoenskroon, Northern Free State
Deep in the heart of the Free State Province, where cattle and maize farms drape the landscapes, is the small, homely town of Viljoenskroon. It was established in 1921 and was named after the farmer (Viljoen) and his horse (Kroon), and it is still governed by the rhythm of the farmlands. Now, it now falls under the Moqhaka Local Municipality.
The local mining industry means that Viljoenskroon serves as an important base for the miners and their families. Diamonds and gold litter the subterranean structures and support these communities. But, more than this, it has history and character. The Evans Tractor Museum on Sandfontein Farm features some of the earliest farming equipment used in this and other farming areas, as well as photos and memorabilia of an agricultural yesteryear.
Viljoenskroon is also home to one of the largest grain silos in the country, which is impressive to see up close. History enthusiasts will enjoy seeing the World War Two Memorial; created using metal, concrete and stone.
It also has well-established stud farms, and those with a passion for horses come from afar to appreciate the world-class studs that live here.
Keen golfers won't be able to resist a morning on the greens and fairways of the 18-hole course. The Vaal River is close to Viljoenskroon and is popular for the many water sports it offers. And, when the Free State showcases its sweltering summer temperatures, fun in the water is the best way to relax.
Viljoenskroon is just over two hours' drive from Johannesburg and the OR Tambo International Airport, and about 3.5 hours from Bloemfontein.
