Fochville, West Rand
Booking accommodation in Fochville allows visitors to see a completely different side of South Africa. This little mining town is rural, originally being established as an agricultural centre in 1920. It is perched between Johannesburg and Potchefstroom, along the N12. Fochville has historical significance, and is an interesting stopover that is just over an hour outside of Jo'burg and about two hours from Pretoria.
The landscapes around Fochville are littered with Sotho or Tswana ruins from the settlements that occupied the area before the 1820 Settlers arrived. This was also a significant site in the Boer War, because it was here that Daniel Theron, a military leader in the Boer army, was killed in 1900. The Theron Memorial was erected in the town to honour him. Renosterfontein is a popular spot for visitors and is home to a traditional African village and Tswana kraals, which are always intriguing to experience.
Fochville has a borehole out of which sulphurous water has been surging since the earliest days of mining. There is also a bird farm and trout hatchery here. The animal farm is a fun place for little ones to interact with and feed a variety of farm animals.
Being so close to the urban epicentre of Johannesburg and its international airport makes Fochville a convenient place to see en route.
