When kulula began operating daily flights to and from Cape Town and Durban from Lanseria Airport in 2005, Lanseria Airport, formerly regarded by all and sundry as merely a grass airstrip somewhere in the northern reaches of Johannesburg, began to play a more serious role in the minds of travellers in and around South Africa.

No surprise, really, as Lanseria has a prime spot north west of Johannesburg. If you know that your flight lands at Lanseria, then looking at the northern suburbs of Johannesburg for accommodation is your best bet. The airport lies closest to the suburbs of Dainfern, Cedar Lakes, Bloubosrand, and Kya Sand, but anywhere west of the N1 will bring you close to the airport. Lanseria is also within minutes of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site and the Lion Park – ideal attractions to start your trip off in the city of gold with a bang.

Today, kulula flies more travellers from Lanseria Airport than from OR Tambo International Airport. Certainly, if John Travolta's descent into Lanseria just before the World Cup is anything to go by, VIPs prefer landing at the smaller airport to secure their anonymity. Apparently the country's heads of state make a point of landing here too.
