Waverley, Johannesburg
Waverley is a small residential suburb in the Highlands North area of Johannesburg, Gauteng. As home to the OR Tambo International Airport and Lanseria International Airport, Johannesburg (dubbed the City of Gold) is the urban epicentre from which millions of international tourists begin their exploration of the beautiful country of South Africa.
Waverley is characterised by wide streets that are flanked by tall, green trees and plenty of greenery, giving the entire suburb a verdant look and a welcoming feel. Waverley is conveniently situated between the M1 highway and Louis Botha Avenue, just 19 kilometres from the OR Tambo International Airport, and within a few minutes' drive from the popular Bidvest Wanderers Stadium, where numerous significant local and international cricket matches are played, and enjoyed by loyal fans. Waverley is home to the oldest school in Johannesburg, the St Mary's School for girls.
The Balfour Mall is a few minutes from Waverley and is a popular shopping centre for its more than 85 retail outlets, franchises, boutiques, and restaurants. The Johannesburg Zoo is a mere 5.5 kilometres from the heart of Waverley. This is a firm favourite, and boasts some really wild residents like the white rhino, caracal, striped hyena, Siberian tiger, African hippo, Nile crocodile, gorilla and Eurasian eagle owl.
Other nearby attractions are the SA Museum of Military History, Bruma Lake Flea Market, Melrose Arch, and Constitution Hill. Waverley really is a convenient, central spot from which to take in the sights, sounds, flavours and smiles of the real South Africa.
