Doonside, South Coast
Perched on the banks of the Little Manzimtoti River, within the balmy province of KwaZulu-Natal on the eastern coast of South Africa, lies the small coastal resort town of Doonside. With an area of only a fraction more than one square kilometre, this town retains its cosy village appeal. It has a local population of around 2 600 people, who welcome a small tourist influx every year.
As part of the eThekwini Municipality, Doonside is part of the KwaZulu-Natal capital of Durban (being only 30 kilometres from this city centre). This metropolis is always abuzz with locals and international tourists that are taking advantage of the many restaurants, bars, clubs, shopping malls, markets and outdoor attractions of the area.
Doonside was once known as Middleton, after its founder. However, in 1910, the name was changed to Doonside, after the house of Lorna Doon.
The larger eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality is some 2 300 square kilometres in area and has a total population of around 3.5 million folk. This remains a popular tourist destination, thanks to its magnificent beaches and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, which attract families, friends, couples and avid surfers from all corners of the globe.
