Gateway Theatre of Shopping, more commonly dubbed Gateway, is all about glam, world-class shopping and the ultimate in customer convenience. Its scale and layout is beautiful, and creates a fabulous setting in which to enjoy retail therapy, good food, and hours of entertainment.

Did you know? Gateway Theatre of Shopping in Umhlanga was modelled on the massive Mall of America in the United States, which is the size of no fewer than seven Yankee Stadiums. Gateway is somewhat smaller, of course, but exudes the same larger-than-life appeal.

Gateway is situated just north of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, in the popular holiday hub of Umhlanga. Specifically, it is perched on Umhlanga Ridge.

Gateway was opened to local and international shoppers in 2001, and boasts hundreds of vendors; ranging from international chains to unique stalls and kiosks, and everything in-between. These include banks, foreign exchange service providers, technology-oriented shops, interior design studios, supermarkets, boutiques, and so much more. Some of the stores include Musica, iStore, Typo, Edgars, Game, Stuttafords, Woolworths, Sunglass Hut, Accessorize, Fossil, Guess, Earthchild, Donna Claire, Forever New, Foschini, Jenni Button, La Senza, Hugo Boss, Polo, Country Road, Hilton Weiner, Lacoste, Truworths, and Zara.

The restaurants, coffee shops and fast food outlets are almost as plentiful and varied as the shops. In addition to all of the usual take-away emporiums, hungry shoppers can look out for Kauai, Lekker Biltong, Baglios Gelateria, Marcel's Frozen Yoghurt and Wakaberry.

The many entertainment options at Gateway appeal to children and adults alike. Friends and family can meet up here and visit Action Bowling, Action Karting, Adventure Putt Putt and Dodgem Cars. Alternatively, there are a number of cinemas, including Cinema Nouveau, two iMax theatres and 18 Ster-Kinekor theatres. Mr Funtubbles Fabulous Funfair is especially popular amongst little ones. Look out for the brightly coloured mini ambulances and trucks that rock back and forth to sweet funfair sounds. The skate park measures an impressive 4 000 square metres and boasts the only kidney bowl in Southern Africa, while the science themed park is a must for visitors of all ages.

There is parking for almost 12 000 vehicles, as well as valet parking in the Palm Boulevard and a shuttle service. A car wash is situated on site for the ultimate in convenience. Public ablutions include family rooms so that parents can tend to the needs of their babies in comfort. Manual wheelchairs are available to shoppers. Other services at Gateway include paramedics, fire marshals, security, and first aid. Gateway Theatre of Shopping is surrounded by a number of other commercial, residential and retail developments.
