Across the great yawning divide of Berea Road, a barrier of snob value particularly in the property market in Durban lies Glenwood - one of Durban's oldest suburbs that extends from its colonial-style mansions near the university down to lower-income Umbilo Road, recently popular because of its proximity to the Durban CBD.

Glenwood has entered an era of suburban revival mostly due to the hive of activity evident on Davenport, Bulwer and Ferguson Roads, where antique shops, the KZNSA Gallery - which includes a gallery that exhibits contemporary visual culture, a shop, a café and a training art programme - and various little shops, restaurants and cafés have attracted a loyal following.

Davenport Road in particular has benefited from the restoration of old Victorian style houses into trendy eateries and boutiques, and looks set to rival Florida Road, although comparing them with Melville in Johannesburg is probably closer to the mark.

Glenwood has a neighbourly vibe and the sedate houses, tree-lined streets and easy access to the centre of Durban make this suburb an ideal place to stay. Its residents tend to be academics, artists, designers and the like who have given the neighbourhood, together with Davenport Road, a distinctly ‘trendy' vibe.

Staying here is more of a serene hideaway than the hive of activity of the beachside suburbs and centre of Durban, and is also convenient for business visitors to the city.
