The warm blue of the Indian Ocean laps stretches of white sand, testifying to the undeniable natural splendour of the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal. It is these idyllic conditions that characterise the holiday resort town of Illovo Beach, so named from the Lovu River that finds it mouth here.

This little town is situated 30 kilometres south of Durban, which is one of the country's busiest and most developed metropolises (and, significantly, home to the King Shaka International Airport). Still, despite is convenient and accessible locale, Illovo Beach is the furthest thing from a bustling urban hub. Rather, it is a peaceful escape from city life, dedicated to celebrating the tranquillity of the ocean, and the warm hospitality of the few locals that call this home.

There is an abundance of holiday accommodation here, including caravan facilities. The beach itself is a fantastic fishing spot, and anglers from all over the world are invited to enjoy the stunning vistas as they try to catch kob, shad or garrick. Alternatively, simply lie on the warm, soft sand and soak up the rays.

For visitors wanting to explore the area, the Ilanda Wilds Nature Reserve is less than eight kilometres away, while the Amanzimtoti Bird Sanctuary is only around 10 kilometres from the beach.
