About Berg-en-Dal Monument
The Berg-en-dal Monument is located just outside the town of Belfast in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
Did you know? The town of Belfast welcomes visitors as the gateway to the Meander. Fly fishers will find joy here and whilst the flowers are known to be spectacular in Spring, Winter time yields the most beautiful orange colour in Aloes which are dotted around the bushveld.
The Berg-en-dal (or Bergendal) Monument was erected just outside the town of eMakhazeni in Mpumalanga, South Africa, in 1935. eMakhazeni was originally known as Belfast and, although it is a small town, it is historically significant, adding an interesting aspect to the South African tourism offering. It is also well known for its trout fishing, as well as for its agriculture industries.
The Berg-en-dal Monument was erected to honour the soldiers killed during the Battle of Berg-en-dal, which was one of the biggest and most significant battles of the Anglo-Boer War at the turn of the 20th century. It took place on the Bergendal Farm in August of 1900, when South African General Louis Botha led the local troops against the British, but was forced to retreat. The remains of those killed in the battle were re-interred under the monument when it was unveiled in 1970. Sadly, not even this battle achieved peace, and the war continued until 1902, resulting in the loss of many more lives.
The monument is best viewed during the daylight hours, although it is free to approach and open to view at any time.
Belfast or eMakhazeni is a scenic little town with beautiful gardens and a number of walking and hiking trails. So, in addition to its being a hotspot for anglers, it is also fabulous for groups of friends or families that enjoy the outdoors and want a little R&R away from the big city.
