Roossenekal, Highlands Meander
Fewer than 100 kilometres from the large, industrial town of Middelburg in the Mpumalanga Province, is the little village of Roossenekal. It has a total area of just over 2.5 square kilometres, and is home to about 2 700 folk. It is part of the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality, right in the heart of some of South Africa's most beautiful landscapes.
Roossenekal was proclaimed as an official town in January of 1886, giving it a long and interesting history. The unusual name comes from the combined surnames of two soldiers (Roos and Senekal) who died in their battle against Mapoch's tribe.
Thanks to its prime positioning, Roossenekal is remote but still within only a few hours' drive from the world-renowned Kruger National Park; an extensive reserve that is home to Africa's Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) as well as hundreds of other species. This is the place to be for those who want the ideal African safari getaway, and who love the outdoors and the wildlife that inhabits it. Other nearby tourist attractions include God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes, and Pilgrim's Rest.
This part of the country offers an entirely different perspective of the untouched beauty of South Africa, as well as of its history and culture.

A sad little town were it seems as if most residents have simply upped and left. Very little left as in infrastructure. A little town in ruin.
