About Moedwil

Moedwil, Bojanala Region

Virtually in the middle of nowhere, just outside Rustenburg on the Platinum Highway, is the post office of Moedwil and a handful of buildings. There is not much substance to the town of Moedwil to say the least. Aside from the role it played in a battle during the Second boer War there is little to draw visitors here.

However, its very location in the North West, part way to Swartruggens, is what draws people here, particularly those who want to escape the city life that keeps us all on a treadmill. That and Moedwil's proximity to the Magaliesberg - the playground of Gauteng.

Moedwil does have a really picturesque cemetry, where the rough, white stones used as mounds make a strong contrast with the red of the soil of this area, and serves - wonderful for photographs. Most of the farms around here lie in typical bushveld terrain and the game parks of the area are malaria free, making them an ideal escape for those living in both Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Close by is the Pilanesberg National Park, one of the major draw cards to the area. It is a million hectare conservation area on the site of what remains of an ancient volcano, and one of the most wonderful places to see wild game such as lion, black rhino, elephants, brown hyenas, black-backed jackals and hippos - although many of these sightings are rare.

Other attractions around Moedwil include the Rustenburg golf club, towns like Groot Marico, Maanhaarrand and Rustenburg, and Sun City Casino, if gambling, glitz and glamour are your thing.
