About Irma Stern Museum
The house in Cape Town where artist Irma Stern resided for most of her life has been converted into a musuem to display her works of art ranging from paintings to ceramics.
Did you know? The permanent collection on display shows Irma Stern's development as an artist whose subject matter included exotic figures, portraits, lush landscapes and still lifes conveyed in a variety of media, ranging from oils and water colours to gouache and charcoal
Having passed away in 1966, the musuem was opened in 1971 and is now run by the University of Cape Town. Many of the rooms in the house are said to be exactly as she left them.
She was said to be a very intense artist in that she would accept no disturbances, chain smoked and drank multiple cups of strong coffee in attempts to complete the painting in one sitting. Her work has been exhibited in countries such as England, Italy, France and Germany whilst South Africa was the last country to truly appreciate her artwork.
Her work incorporated German expressionism with uniquely African elements and she painted with water colours, oils, gouache, charcoal and designed sculptures and ceramics which included jars, jugs and plates decorated with the female form and faces.
In addition to her work you'll find a gallery upstairs displaying the work of various contemporary South African artists. Often she would utilise a palette knife to apply thick paint which was said to emotionally ‘intensify' her artwork even more. In 2011, one of her paintings sold for a whopping R34 million at a London Auction which was a record for a South African artist.
The Irma Stern Musuem is open between Tuesday and Saturday. For more info and contact details see Visit the Irma Stern Museum.
