About Map of Africa Monument

Most of the Cape Agulhas accommodation spots boast incredible views of the point where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic Ocean in a display of natural beauty. But, despite this being the meeting point of two mammoth oceans, it is tranquil; celebrating all that is the unspoilt beauty of the earth in her most natural forms.

Did you know? Cape Agulhas is about three hours from Cape Town to the west and a similar distance from the start of the Garden Route to the east.

And it is this convergence of tranquillity and drama, and the unique allure of Africa that the Map of Africa monument at Cape Agulhas celebrates.

The monument has a circumference of 30 metres and includes the shape of the continent and the design elements of a compass. Its scale is impressive and its design timeless. Visitors are encouraged to walk around and through the structure; using this opportunity to reflect on and embrace how tiny humans are in relation to these two oceans; yet how we co-exist without competition.

The monument was an initiative by the Department of Tourism, who set it up at the Agulhas National Park. They worked in collaboration with South African National Parks (SANParks) to create something special that will feature on the itinerary of local and international tourists, and will set Cape Agulhas apart for this one-of-a-kind attraction. A number of well known African landmarks feature on the monument, and are always fun to find and identify (especially for kids and travellers with a chronic case of wanderlust).

A one-kilometre road was built and the boardwalk and its surrounds were revamped to make the Map of Africa accessible and fun to visit.

This monument took a year to construct and cost R15 million. Building it provided jobs to dozens of people from the local community. More development around the monument and Cape Agulhas is on the cards too. So, this area is a dynamic destination that keeps offering more and more to its visitors.
