Ottery, Southern Suburbs
The Cape Town suburb of Ottery is located in the Southern Suburbs of the Mother City, close to Plumstead, Wynberg, Kenilworth and the massive region known as the Cape Flats. This is a residential area that is well serviced by public transport providers, and is close to the major motorways leading both into the city centre and out of it. The most notable of these motorways are the M5, the M3 and the N2.
Ottery was established in the early part of the 1900's, thanks to the railway line, which had initially been a private line but was soon opened up to the public. Today, the train and many of the local busses and taxis pass right through Ottery, making it accessible and easy to get around. These are used extensively by locals and tourists alike.
Ottery is home to a number of small businesses as well as shops and shopping complexes. China Town is a major attraction (although not an official Chinatown), and is home to almost 50 shops, most of which sell Chinese imports at very competitive prices.
There is also the Ottery Centre, which includes a Pick n Pay Hypermarket, Pick n Pay Liquor store, Nando's, a post office, and Spur, as well as several other retail outlets. It has recently been refurbished. Other attractions within Ottery include the Royal Cape Golf Club and the Youngsfield Military Base, which plays host to the annual Cape Argus Junior Cycle Tour.
Ottery is about 20 minutes' drive from the City Bowl of Cape Town (including massive attractions like Table Mountain, Lion's Head, Long Street, the CTICC, and the V & A Waterfront), and less than an hour's drive from the Cape Winelands (Stellenbosch, Paarl, Pniel and Franschhoek).
