About Stony Point Penguin Colony
Quieter and less of a tourist mecca, Stony Point is just over an hour's drive from Cape Town to reach the town of Betty's Bay - if you take the R44. The scenery and the views alone are well worth the trip.
Did you know? According to CapeNature, Stony Point Nature Reserve is home to one of the largest successful breeding colonies of African Penguin in the world.
Those who make the effort to head to Stony Point Penguin Colony rate it high on the following criteria – fewer coach loads of tourists, a more rustic atmosphere (the boardwalks on the rocky peninsula were built back in the late '80s), and a cheaper entrance fee. But if you're a penguin fan, both mainland colonies are worth a visit.
Roughly 3 600 penguins now live at Stony Point's old whaling station, increasing from the two who originally ventured here in 1985. And their population continues to expand – exciting on the one hand for conservation, but something of a problem for locals who live here and find themselves inundated when a fence is broken, or similar, as happened in 2012.
Local authorities have since constructed a new fence to try and prevent the influx of birds into neighbours' gardens and bedrooms. They also relocated a number of birds by using artificial penguin houses donated by the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, and nests from the Leiden Conservation Foundation.
How to get there: Take Clarence Drive (R44) until you reach Stony Point, on the edge of Betty's Bay. Follow Porter Drive for roughly 3km until you see the sign 'Mooi Hawens' and the sign of a penguin.
