About East Wynberg Historical Walk
This particular historical walk in Wynberg you will find on a map that you can get from the library in Wynberg, or from the Old Wynberg Village Society who were instrumental in producing it.
Did you know? To get a copy of the map try the Wynberg Library, the Old Wynberg Village Society or the South African Heritage Resources Agency, all of whom were involved in producing the map, which is one of a series of four.
It is one of a series of maps designed to promote walking Wynberg, whilst drinking in the historical buildings. Not every suburb offers historical maps in this way.
East Wynberg, for those who do not know, lies east of Wynberg Main Road – the area many in Cape Town consider the 'wrong side' of the railway line. Originally this was part of a huge tract of farm land known as Rust en Werk and proposed as a conservation area. Today, although slightly run-down, this part of Wynberg has a lot of character and there are still many examples of turn-of-the-century working class housing and Victorian facades, tin roofs and verandahs with pretty brackets.
Chelsea Village it is not, but then the likes of Chelsea Village could be anywhere in England, whereas East Wynberg is quintessentially South African.
Explore Berry Road, York, Castletown, Vine Roads, Batt's Wood and discover a still-existing, albeit small, wetland lined with trees.
See evidence of Victorian stone cottages in Vine Road, explore the area around the Yusefeyah mosque and the station – the area today a melting pot of culture and a pedestrianised area through which a myriad commuters pass on a daily basis – once known as De Out Plaas.
Explore the park from which Plumstead gets its name, where cattle used to graze and where a man by the name of Henry Batt is buried, gored by the very cattle he put there to graze in what was part of his estate.
