About the Drak Challenge
Drak Challenge Canoe Marathon, and the athletes and their spectators can barely wait for the excitement that this event promises. It will take place on the Mzimkhulu River in the scenic southern Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal, assuring visitors of backdrops that are nothing short of awe-inspiring.
This is one of the three largest races in South Africa and covers a massive 72 kilometres over the course of the event. About 1 000 paddlers participate, and each is determined to tackle the steep, rocky reaches of the Mzimkhulu River over the two days. This technically challenging course is matched by the pristine, clear waters of the Drakensberg for spectacular results.
The river is full of fantastic twists, turns and rapids that bear apt names like Toilet Bowl, Boomslang Cataract, Phoenix Nasty, Handbrake Turn, Full Stop, Big Dipper, Wake Up Rapid, and Heaven and Hell. On the first day, competitors will start at Castleburn and finish at the Swartberg Road bridge, some 50 kilometres away. On the second day, they will start from the same bridge and finish at Hopewell Farm. Prize-giving will follow, as will a great celebration for those who want to relish in their massive accomplishments.
The Drak event provides fantastic work opportunities and community upliftment initiatives to the locals staying in Himeville. This part of KwaZulu-Natal is really beautiful, and those attending the race are encouraged to stay longer and explore the surrounds. There are hiking trails through the surrounding mountains, incredible rock art left behind by the San of centuries passed, and a number of fascinating museums.
Durban and the King Shaka International Airport are a little over 2.5 hours from Himeville, making this a convenient and accessible spot for competitors and fans from all over the world.
