Built on the Great Letaba River, you will find Ebenezer Dam near Tzaneen. It lies between the lovely little town of Haenertsburg and the Magoebaskloof, in the Land of the Silver Mist.

Ebenezer Dam is a popular and particularly pretty dam visited often by locals and visitors for picnics, camping, birding, fishing and boating. The early morning mists that tend to cover the dam lend a mysterious atmosphere to the first part of the day, and can make it chilly.

Once a year is the famous Ebenezer Mile, a mile swim that takes place on the third Saturday of March at the Mountain Yacht Club on the dam.

Ebenzer has a large surface area of 386ha (roughly a third of the size of Hartebeespoort dam) and supplies water to Tzaneen and the surrounding area.

Locals speak about the dam as having two main sections – the river section where there is some rock and a number of trees, and then the main 'lake' area where everyone heads for picnics.

Yet despite ranking as a popular fishing destination, the steep banks of the Ebenezer make it more than a little difficult to fish from. Boat fishing though yields largemouth and smallmouth bass, rainbow trout, carp, kurper and barbel. There is a fee to launch your boat.

And there is a fair amount of development along the banks of the dam - Misty Crown is a recent development selling bankside stands with accompanying building guidelines.

Known as The Mountain, Haenertsburg, the dam and the Magoebaskloof combine to make up one of the most beautiful areas in the country with plenty of activity options, accommodation, restaurants and little shops to visit.
