About Fonteinbos Nature Reserve
Deep within the Karoo Heartland, along the Kraai River banks, lies the 1 500 hectares of the Fonteinbos Nature Reserve. The Fonteinbos Nature Reserve lies just outside the small town of Aberdeen which is about 3 hours drive from Port Elizabeth (262,4 km) via R75 and R338.
Did you know? Aberdeen is filled with examples of Victorian architecture, and the steepled Dutch Reformed church with its 50 metre tower is the highest in South Africa.
Deep within the Karoo Heartland, along the Kraai River banks, lies the 1 500 hectares of the Fonteinbos Nature Reserve.
The Fontainbos reserve, just outside the small town of Aberdeen, is functional, as its natural spring (Die Oog) supplies the entire town and its agricultural sector with its water.
Fonteinbos is home to a few wildlife species. These include antelope, as well as ostriches, vervet monkeys, and some birdlife. These are best enjoyed on one of the walking trails.
The prehistoric history of the Karoo is fascinating, and visitors are invited to follow the fossilised dinosaur tracks in the rock formations for a taste of this history.
