About Knersvlakte Nature Reserve
Knersvlakte Nature Reserve (proclaimed in September 2014) is situated on the West Coast between Klawer in the Western Cape and Kliprand in the Northern Cape. It is idyllically nestled just north of the Olifants River. The reserve covers some 85 500 hectares, and is home to dwarf succulents.
Did you know? The Knersvlakte region is situated in the Western Cape Province within the Succulent Karoo.
The Knersvlakte is somewhat sparse, even seeming to be quite desolate in places. However, it is actually teeming with a unique variety of exquisite plants and animals, which make it a treasured spot, one that demands protection and conservation.
The Knersvlakte is acclaimed for its magnificent white quartzite gravel, and the myriad of succulent species, some clearly visible and some secreted by impressive rock formations. Of the 1 500 plant species in the Knersvlakte, about 190 species are endemic to the region. Around 155 of these are threatened with extinction, as they succumb easily to climatic conditions and changes.
As such, this area is one of high concern amongst conservationists, as well as amongst those who appreciate the natural diversity of the country. It is for this reason that the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) of South Africa partnered with CapeNature and the Leslie Hill Succulent Karoo Trust to initiate a workable, physical protective resource. It is being managed by CapeNature, with the support of SANBI (South African National Biodiversity Institute) and the local landowners.
Thus was born the Knersvlakte Nature Reserve, which is about three hours' drive from the Mother City, as Cape Town is affectionately known. It was proclaimed in terms of the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act.
The reserve covers some 85 500 hectares, and is home to dwarf succulents and hardy insect species, as well as a variety of birds reptiles and land animals. Thanks to the conservation and research efforts, new species are being discovered here on a regular basis, adding to its wealth of fauna and flora.
