About Leon Taljaard Nature Reserve

The Leon Taljaard Nature Reserve lies close to the town of Vryburg, about 150 km southwest of Mafikeng and four hours' west of Johannesburg.

Did you know? There is a commemoration plaque of the prisoners executed here, and a small museum.

The 2 000 hectare reserve is right next door to the Swartfontein resort and contains white rhino, eland, buffalo, black and blue wildebeest, waterbuck, Burchell's and mountain zebra and springbuck.

There are also at least 110 different bird species recorded in the vicinity, and whilst the terrain is rather flat there are smatterings of bush, and a wonderful 30 km two-day hiking trail with overnight shelter in rustic hiking huts that make this reserve popular amongst those who want to get away from it all. Leon Taljaard is thus perfect for family picnics and days spent spotting wildlife and birds.

Of interest is the gate house on the Kuruman entrance to the reserve – there are two entrances, one on Molopo Road just outside the centre of Vryburg, and the other on the Kuruman road.

This particular entrance looks more as though it is built as something of a fortress – a little excessive when you consider that there are no predators in the reserve. But closer inspection reveals it was built as a former South African War (Boer War) prison to house Afrikaans or Boer prisoners captured by the British forces.
