About Oyster Bay Reserve

Oyster Bay Reserve is a 330 hectare botanical nature reserve on the outskirts of Mossel Bay. The aim of the Oyster Bay reserve is to conserve, preserve and educate by running a series of community projects that include the Bishops Bird Hide and Dam - a local community construction project to build a bird hide to blend into the environment.

The wooden structure – its outer walls brush-packed with dried branches from local alien vegetation – is invisible to birds, has raised awareness about local birds, and offers future jobs once bird tours start in the area. A local game exchange has introduced zebra into the reserve, whilst a bee project will produce sustainable, marketable honey and help pollinate the reserve's flowers.

A further donkey cart project intends offering guided tours through the reserve with trained community rangers.

Visit the reserve for hiking trails along which you can explore the indigenous vegetation and fauna of the Garden Route. Phone ahead to book your local guide – a fantastic way to learn about the local vegetation and its myriad uses, particularly amongst traditional healers, whilst giving back to local communities.

Trails in the reserve take one past the Pinnacle Point Caves – a current archaeological dig. Cave 13B made headline news when Doctor Nilssen and his team revealed signs of shellfish consumption and ochre and bladelet (small tool) use that pointed to modern behaviour pre-dating any similar early examples in either Europe or at the more local Blombos Caves near Stillbaai.

You will find the reserve on the outskirts of Mossel Bay between the residential townships of Dana Bay, Kwa Nonquaba, Pinnacle Point and Heiderand.
