About Thathe Vondo Forest

Regarded as the most majestic and beautiful forest in the Limpopo region, Thathe Vondo is also regarded as sacred by the local Venda people.

Did you know? Steeped in ancient mythology, it is clear that there is something mystical about this place, something that can be felt instantly.

Folklore tells of many tales, ranging from sitings of sacred white lions, thunder-and-lighting birds which are said to 'fly on the wings of thunder', through to men with broken hearts who have ventured into the forest and been transformed into pythons.

Thathe Vondo Forest is bursting with life, from giant hardwood and yellowwood trees, ferns, thick undergrowth, creepers, through to forest species of birds. A great birding route, one can view white-starred robin, chorister robin-chat, Knysna turaco, yellow-streaked greenbul and orange ground-thrush.

Due to its cultural status by the Venda people, no hiking is allowed in the forest, although it can be explored along a designated forestry track, accompanied by a local guide.

The forest is located above the Lake Fundudzi, nestled in the mountains, and we highly recommend visiting the lake, which is also steeped in local folklore.

From the lake, one can drive to the top of the Soutpansberg and to the stunning Mahovhovho Waterfall - a breathtakingly beautiful site that cannot be missed.
