About Soweto Country Club
Soweto - a massive township on the outskirts of Johannesburg - is, undoubtedly, one of South Africa's most vibrant areas. It represents the full spectrum of colours, languages and customs; and speaks of a beautiful South Africa with a complex past. In the heart of this historical and cultural epicentre is the Soweto Country Club, located in Pimville, Gauteng.
Having been established in 1974, this course was soon a favourite for its being the only course that accommodated black golf players. However, in its early years, it only had sand greens and no real fairways to speak of. Still, it was in high demand for its inclusion of players from different ethnic backgrounds. Then, in 1980, it underwent a makeover. The sandy greens were covered in grass and it fell under the formal management of a greens keeper.
Today, this 18-hole woodlands golf course remains a great one to play for enthusiasts and weekend golfers alike. It is 6 560 meters long and has a par rating of 72. The course itself was designed by acclaimed golfing legend, Gary Player. The facilities here include a bar and halfway house, where golfers can prepare for a day on the greens or can recap on their day's game with some welcome refreshments.
There is also a driving range and a putting green for those wanting to put their skills to the test and practice some shots before their game. Robbie's Place is a restaurant and tavern that combines a township vibe with a relaxed ambience in which to enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner. It is situated right across the road from the golf course and assures golfers of an authentic South African experience. Visitors will be please to know that play here is open to the public. However, it is highly recommended that you book your hotel or accommodation in Soweto and your tee-off times ahead to avoid disappointment.
Pimville, where the Soweto Country Club can be found, is located between the well-known areas of Eldorado Park and Kliptown. It is about 30 minutes' drive from the CBD of Johannesburg, which is a corporate and retail hotspot for millions of tourists from around the world. Johannesburg is also home to the OR Tambo International Airport.
