About Barkly East Museum
Barkly East Museum offers fascinating displays telling a story about the history of Barkly East, how it originated and artifacts and items found in the area giving you an insight into how people lived and survived in the area.
The museum was originally a library and municipal office built in 1891 and articles were collected gradually and it was then decided to turn it into a museum in 1971. Collections grew over the years and now comprise of a variety of objects from articles, photographs, everyday domestic items used and furniture to farming tools used for sheep and cattle farming.
You will also find traditional Xhosa artwork, weapons and beadwork and a display of uniforms and clothing dating from the Anglo Boer War to the First and Second World Wars.
