About Bushmen Painting Walk
Within the spectacular beauty of the Baviaanskloof, a number of hiking and walking trails lie in wait for eager adventurers. The Bushmen Painting Walk is ideal as it combines history and culture with the untainted splendour of this pristine part of the Eastern Cape.
This hike starts at the Cedar Tourism accommodation area and takes two hours to complete, including a 30-minute break at the cave itself. The trail winds through the gorgeous Leopard Kloof Valley before hikers reach the cave, in which incredible rock paintings can be found. This cave is famous for the Running Man, which is a depiction of a medicine man, wearing a mask and carrying sticks. Significantly, he is also wearing a pair of shoes. The details found in this painting carry massive implications regarding the cultures and history of the region. The painting is on a wide ledge that is some 10 metres from the ground. Therefore, this excursion is only suitable for hikers that do not suffer from bad vertigo and are not afraid of heights.
The Bushmen Painting Walk is a guided one, as the guide is required to get visitors to the site safely, and to ensure that this precious site is not damaged or tampered with in any way. In time, these guides will be trained to provide further insights into the specific history and the wonderful way in which it has shaped this Rainbow Nation. The guided walk is free of charge, but available only to overnight guests of the Cedar Falls Base Camp.
Port Elizabeth, Jeffrey's Bay, Shamwari Game Reserve and the Addo Elephant National Park are all only about two to three hours' drive away from the Baviaanskloof.
