About Elandsheuwel MTB Trails
Where: on the R329 from Steytlerville towards Willowmore
Level: great family rides; not very technical although there are a few rocky bits
Type of route: most of the rides are on jeep track
Best: this is the Karoo at its best – rugged mountains, grassy plains and open vistas – may become uncomfortably hot during summer (the night skies are incredible); winter is surprisingly sunny
Elandsheuwel is a working angora goat and merino sheep farm that is easily classified as 'far from the madding crowd'. It offers three trails – 6km, 14 km and 18 km. However further jeep tracks, 4x4 routes and paths all over the farm, over and across hills, make up hundreds of kilometres of trails if you are prepared to explore.
6 km route – heads up a valley in amongst towering cliffs, where you will find a wonderful hidden waterfall. Though not difficult or long, there is a bit right at the end that needs a certain amount of skill (loose and rocky bits) although you can get off your bike and push by this stage (home is not too far).
14 km route – perfect for the whole family; not taxing as most of it is on the straight and flat over smooth jeep track. Great way to see wild life. Even the 'unfit' will manage this route.
17 km route – this is the 14 km route plus an added uphill for those who want to exert themselves. The terrain is more difficult but the views are worth the effort.
The Steytlerville MTB Race happens annually in August.
