About Mtentu Beach
Mtentu is a little village at the mouth of the Mtentu River, on the other side of the river from the beautiful Mkambati Nature Reserve, in the northerly reaches of the Wild Coast.
There is a 25 km hike you can do along the beach from the Wild Coast casino, near Port Edward, to Mtentu, and back again, known as the Mtentu Explorer.
It takes one through the 'Pondoland Centre of Endemism' (another way of saying that there are seriously threatened and beautiful plants in this region), a highlight for anyone with knowledge and love for plants, and includes the red dunes and the Mzamba fossils as part of the hike (contact Active Escapes if you're interested).
Mtentu beach is a wonderful space, bordered on one side by a cliff face and on the other by the Mkambati reserve.
But it isn't the only beach in the area. Not even 2 km away is a beach that is literally covered in pebbles of every shape and size, aptly name Pebble Beach (you'll have to hike to this one as you can't reach it by road); Skate Bay is a little bay within easy walking distance of Mtentu and a great place for fishering and swimming; whilst Skombe beach is a 4 km walk (or drive) away and where you'll find the red sand dunes (if you haven't already walked through them on the Mtentu Explorer.
The estuary at Skombe is well known for snorkelling.
