About The Prester John Memorial
The Prester John memorial stands proudly in Fleming Square next to the City Hall in Port Elizabeth. The monument was erected in 1986 and is of the late king-priest, Prester John and a Portuguese navigator inside a Coptic cross.
The monument itself is dedicated to Portuguese settlers in the area and to Prester John. The Portuguese sailors went in search of Prester John who was believed to rule a great empire in Asia and Ethiopia.
After Prester John wrote a letter to the Roman Empire describing his wealth and telling of his magical kingdom that had now come under threat from barbarians, the search began for his riches. The legend of Prester John and his kingdom had a large impact on geographical knowledge as foreign lands were discovered by explorers in search of him and his wealth.
