About Sukkelpoort 4x4 Trail
The Kouga Region of the Eastern Cape Province is one that remains quiet, undisturbed by industrial and commercial development. One of the best ways to experience the serenity and unspoilt quality of the region is to venture out on one of the rugged 4x4 trails. Sukkelpoort is a circular route that promises plenty in the way of adventure within the natural prettiness of this province.
The Sukkelpoort 4x4 Trail is a circular one that actually connects with three others (the Kouga River, Blouberg and Abseil trails) to create a unique route that drivers can construct, to a degree. The trail is 18 kilometres long, grade three, and takes between two and three hours to complete. Drivers can expect to tackle varying terrain, including rocks, gravel, loose stones and massive boulders, creating a course that offers something for everyone.
No formal guide is required for this trail, as it is safe and easy enough to tackle unassisted. It begins with a narrow, rocky valley that extends for some five kilometres, before it joins up with another trail. This first part of the route can be tricky, as the rocks can cause wheels to slip and the bottom of your vehicle to get damaged.
Drivers can choose to stop at the abseil cliff for a break, some refreshments, and excellent views of the Kouga Region and its extensive mountain ranges. The river provides some water crossings for those drivers that are up to it, as well as fishing opportunities to unwind and soak up the beauty before heading out on the trail again.
Thanks to the natural splendour and variety of the area in which the Sukkelpoort 4x4 Route is nestled, the entire region is a fabulous choice for groups of friends or families that enjoy being outdoors. Local activities, apart from the 4x4 adventures, include bird watching, abseiling, mountain climbing, hiking, cycling, and fishing. Sukkelpoort is only 28 kilometres from the small agricultural town of Joubertina, which is secluded at the foot of the mountains.
