Deep within the natural splendour of the Outeniqua Mountain Range, just inland from the Garden Route, is the stunning holiday farm of Bonniedale. It covers 1 650 hectares and showcases some of the pretty fynbos, which is a scrubby floral species that is endemic to South Africa. All this is secreted within the 50 000 hectares of the Attaquas Kloof Conservancy, which testifies to the abundance of fauna and flora of this part of South Africa.

Thanks to its idyllic setting, this is the perfect place in which to enjoy the scenery of the Western Cape, particularly for 4x4 enthusiasts that want to test their skills while drinking in the views. Bonniedale offers a number of trails, some of which are circular, while others are return routes. These take between six and eight hours to complete for drivers wanting to tackle all of them. They have a grading of three to four, and are all self-guided. However, guides are available for drivers who would prefer some professional advice. The routes are characterised by several river crossings, gravel, mud, rocks and steep slopes.

The Bonniedale 4x4 Trail is open all year round. However, summer days can become extremely hot and winter mornings and evenings very chilly. So, drivers should be prepared for some tough weather conditions at these times of year.

During your drive, look out for some of the many antelope species that amble through the picturesque countryside. In addition, baboons, porcupines, hyenas and even the elusive leopard may be spotted; and nature-lovers will, no doubt, relish their time at Bonniedale.

Other activities on the farm include hiking, walking, cycling, canoeing and horse riding. The farm is only 55 kilometres from Mossel Bay, and close to Knysna, George and Plettenberg Bay.
