Only minutes away from many of the Garden Route accommodation spots is the Fragrance Route in Friemersheim. Here, the flora, culture and heritage of the Western Cape are on full display for visitors from around the world to enjoy. The circular Fragrance Route is about 40 kilometres long and is conveniently situated right between George and Mossel Bay. And it is along this pretty route, with all of its exciting things to do and see, that the Shweshwe Stop shop can be found.

Shweshwe is a traditional South African textile, characterised by its distinct small print and vibrant colours (usually red, blue or brown). It is commonly worn by newlywed Xhosa women and married Sotho women. But, because it is so beautiful and vibrant, this textile is being used more and more in contemporary fashion, homeware and design. The Shweshwe Stop on the Fragrance Route is all about this versatile fabric.

It was established in 2018 with the aim of uplifting the local community by providing a platform on which to sell their beautiful designs and products. Only “national heritage item” Three Cats shweshwe is used, ensuring that each piece is proudly South African. The range includes clothing, toys, bags, and covered buttons that will make any outfit pop. However, the star of the Shweshwe Stop show is the PROEbag. This is a slow cooker that uses no electricity and can easily be transported by hand. It's perfect for camping and long beach days. What's more, because the local people make them, buying one (for yourself or as a gift) uplifts the communities around the Garden Route.

The Great Brak Museum also has loads more; including information about the Friemersheim church and the Volkwyn chair. Miniature wire versions of the chair are for sale too. Make a day of visiting the Fragrance Route and its Shweshwe Stop shop for a really special, memorable experience along the Garden Route.
