Owned and run by husband and wife, Manny and Paula, 1920 has that tangible feel of a ‘favourite local' taverna: one that can only be achieved by hands-on management and devotion, with a sprinkling of regulars who return over and over again for Paula's magical Madeiran specialties. Manny makes his patrons feel welcome, and greets familiar faces and return customers with his vibrant personality.

Many dishes on the menu have been inspired by Paula's own family recipes, with new specials on the board every Tuesday. We hear that the Oxtail falls off the bone, that their Porco com Ameijoa (clam and pork casserole) is pure magic and that their calamari melts in your mouth.

With so many entrancing delights on the starter menu, we suggest ordering a few. Chourico is flame-grilled with 1920 Portuguese brandy; Beef Trinchado is lip-smacking; Chicken-livers are legendary and Clams are braised in white wine and chilli. The selection of tantalising dishes on the mains menu inspires absolute delight, and with the added benefit of affordability, 1920 offers a winning combination. Quail is grilled and topped with raisin, pine nut and sherry sauce; traditional Bacalhau (cod fish with baby potatoes, chickpeas and mixed vegetables) will impress any Portuguese patrons; rump is expertly grilled; Queen and King Prawns inspire poetry and their Seafood Pot, with mussels, clams and chourico, tastes sublime.
