The vibrant suburb of Illovo in Johannesburg is home to a number of businesses, shops and restaurants. Escondido Tapas is one that is particularly popular amongst locals that want plenty of variety, fabulous flavours and friendly service.

Delicious Spanish-style tapas with Mediterranean and South African influences are served here, giving diners the opportunity to sample a range of different dishes for lunch and dinner. The atmosphere is laid back and friendly; and the staff members pride themselves on being knowledgeable and efficient.

Favourite dishes include the arancini balls (flavourful fried risotto balls), pumpkin fritters, seared trout with pawpaw and mint, lamb tagine with tabbouleh, roast butternut and gorgonzola tart, pork and halloumi springrolls, and soy-glazed lamb riblets. These are all tapas-sized servings, which means that diners get to have a few mouth-watering samples. There are a number of vegetarian options available too. Desserts are decadent and delicious, no matter what the selection. However, the menu is as dynamic as the vibe, and regular patrons can look forward to something new and exciting.

The wine list is extensive, offering local and international labels to complement the dishes. There are also a number of craft beers available, as well as spirits, coolers and ciders. Wines are available by the glass or bottle (and, in some cases, even by the ‘box', meaning by the wooden bin numbers in the glass cellar). Every month, an imported wine is featured, showcasing the wine-making regions of places like South America.

The décor is characterised by dark wood and rich textures, the clean glass lines of the cellar, and blackboards on which the menu is scrawled. This combination gives Escondido Tapas an eclectic style and charm.

There are indoor and outdoor eating areas available, giving the diners the choice between immersing themselves in the tasteful décor and ambience, and taking advantage of the South African summer air. The indoor area is air-conditioned and no smoking is permitted.
