These two pretty day trails in the heart of the Magaliesburg are a favourite amongst hikers, not least because of their easy proximity to Johannesburg and Pretoria.

And yet the trail manages to feel remote enough to easily lose all sense of the cities that are but 45 minutes' away.

Add to that the bonus of a swimming pool, impressive scenery, the presence of game and a suspension bridge and cable river crossing, and the Hennops hiking trail's attraction becomes evident.

Two day trails, the Krokodilberg trail and the Zebra trail, can be combined to facilitate a weekend's worth of hiking.

Krokodilberg is 11.3 km and heads from the farmhouse into the mountains, beginning with a descent to the banks of the Hennops River. This route passes dolomite formations, what is left of an Anglo-Boer War hospital, over the river via a suspension bridge and up to the ridges of the Magaliesberg with views over the valley and the chance to see Pruipie's cave, ending with a river recrossing by means of a cable car, which hikers report is the route's highlight.

The 6 km Zebra Trail is a lot shorter, but takes hikers into a fenced game area with the chances of spotting zebra amongst other wildlife.
