About Lindfield Victorian House Museum
The Lindfield Victorian House Museum is a living museum with the owner, Katharine Love, living in the house as well as overseeing the day-to-day running of the museum. The museum offers one the opportunity to literally step back in time and enjoy the Victorian splendour of the era.
The house is painstakingly set up as it would have been when a Victorian family lived there. Katharine shares her vast knowledge of Victorian customs and attitudes as well as the contents of the rooms – there are hundreds of items of interest. The libraries (main and children's) have a vast and intriguing collection of books including various encyclopaedias of the time. The main library has a letter opener on display, adorned with a decorative crystal in the handle – but there is an amazing surprise to the letter opener if you look very carefully – be sure to ask about that!
The dining room is spectacular in the grandeur of the era with intriguing objects on display such as an automatic egg boiler with a way of setting for soft or hard boiled eggs - without electricity – imagine that!
When walking down the long passage leading to the kitchen, be sure to ask why there is a green felt / baize lined door blocking your way! The kitchen is full of the equipment and gadgets of the era including an icebox, stove, pots and pans and so on.
A visit to this museum is highly recommended and Katharine conducts daily tours of up to two hours long, by appointment.
