About Linksfield Ridge House

Lafayette Ron Hubbard, better known as L Ron Hubbard, was the founder of Scientology and an acclaimed science fiction author. Scientology is a church that maintains that its members not be taught doctrine, but discover the truth through their own observations and awareness, which should grow over time.

The Linksfield Ridge House in Johannesburg was occupied by L Ron Hubbard during his time in South Africa in the 1960's. Here, he took an active role in anti-apartheid initiatives, even writing a constitution that enforced a “one man, one vote” ideology, a concept that only came into fruition decades later. He also presented a bill of rights and penal code for justice and equality, feeling strongly about the treatment of human beings, regardless of colour or creed.

The Linksfield Ridge House has been restored and is preserved for visitors to catch a glimpse of the life and practices of L Ron Hubbard. The living room, where many meetings were conducted to discuss the plans for South Africa in the context of Scientology and politics, has been completely restored to showcase the original wooden floors and tasteful furnishings. L Ron Hubbard's study is also in pristine condition, complete with the reference books and the motion picture camera he used. The artefacts that he collected from around Africa are on display here too.

Using Linksfield Ridge House as his base, Hubbard established a number of subsidiary organisations and offices for new Scientology groups. He also developed new pathways into the well-established organisation, encouraging folk to join his church as a way to find answers and success.

There are also displays that tell of Hubbard's visits to local prisons, where he implemented criminal reform programmes that would help wrongdoers to be rehabilitated. Details of his lectures to Scientologists and the work that he did in Zimbabwe are also recorded for visitors to enjoy when visiting this site. Linksfield Ridge House is still used today for officials and dignitaries that meet here in order to use some of Hubbard's social improvement concepts and technologies.

Linksfield Ridge is a suburb that is close to many of Johannesburg's important facilities and amenities. It is less than 20 kilometres from the OR Tambo International Airport, and about 30 minutes' drive from Sandton.
