About Mariamman Temple
In the heart of Pretoria is the city's oldest Hindu temple, Mariamman. This temple was built in 1905 and its colourful detail and rich history continue to draw visitors back again and again to see, really experience, its detail.
Mariamman Temple was named after the Hindu goddess of rain, fertility and disease and is dedicated to her. She is believed to be able to cure diseases or illnesses related to heat (like rashes) and is just one of many Hindu gods that is worshipped. The temple is adorned with intricate details and exotic colours, with carvings and textures that are undeniably Indian and intriguingly unique. The detail and eclectic collection of pretty statues really makes this a one-of-a-kind destination for travellers.
The ornate structure is perched at the entrance of Marabastad, a suburb that is locally known as the Asiatic Bazaar. This is a vibrant hub where the culture and nuances of the Hindu religion are celebrated. More than this, the suburb is culturally diverse and an excellent representation of the real, multifaceted South Africa of today.
Pretoria is a fascinating city in its own right, with plenty of political and historical attractions for visitors that want to get a taste of this side of the South Africa heritage. It is about an hour away from the heart of Johannesburg and the international airport here.
