About Nambitha's Restaurant
Nambitha is one of the South African tourist attractions that is so authentic and special that it holds just as much appeal for locals as it does for international visitors. The word “nambitha” means “to taste”; a fabulously apt name for this restaurant. Situated in one of the country's largest townships, Soweto, Nambitha has become one of the area's best loved eateries, characterised by a modern vibe and a menu brimming with fresh flavours and a novel approach to dining.
You are guaranteed to enjoy some of the best traditional food here. The atmosphere is electric and the décor will draw your attention with outstanding photographs on display taken by worldwide, highly praised photographers Peter Magubane and Jurgen Schadeburg.
Nambitha's restaurant is situated on the Soweto tourist trail and lies on the same street as the previous homes of Nelson Mandela and Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu so as you can imagine that Vilikaze Street is a very popular sightseeing destination. It is advisable to book for lunch time or weekend visits to avoid disappointment.
The relaxed ambience is well complemented by friendly service and stunning entertainment that stretches late into the night and keeps the vibe going. Nambitha is the creation and accomplishment of Khulani Vilakazi, who is a respected local entrepreneur. He had the vision of representing the South African and Sowetan cultures; a dream that has resulted in this culinary experience. It is at Nambitha that the various cultures of South Africa are represented by the local and traditional food and the many photographs that tell fascinating tales about the country and its people.
This family-friendly restaurant serves breakfasts, lunches and dinners, and well-known locals can often be seen enjoying refreshments with friends and family. The menu includes omelettes, burgers, oxtail, sticky ribs, grilled rump, traditional tripe and umngqusho (samp and beans). Nambitha is also known for its excellent prices, appealing to locals and visitors.
The restaurant is situated in Vilakazi Street and is close to the Mandela Family Museum and the Hector Pieterson Memorial.
