About Regina Mundi Church
The Regina Mundi Church in Soweto, visited by Nelson Mandela, Michelle Obama as well as Bill and Hilary Clinton, is filled with history and shows a time of hardship and violence amongst the Sowetans during the liberation struggle.
Built in 1964 the church became a refuge for thousands during the apartheid regardless of their beliefs or religion and gave them the shelter and protection. During the uprising, police ambushed the church, opening fire inside this haven in order to get rid of protesting students who were hiding here for safety.
Today bullet holes still scar the ceilings, the marble alter still lies broken and the statue of Christ damaged. These are all reminders of the hardship endured during these dark times.
Stained glass windows have since been donated and pews been replaced. The church grounds are peaceful and beautiful offering a visitor absolute tranquility.
