About See the Retief Obelisk
The Retief Obelisk designed by architects Meiring, Naudé, Lötter and Botha stands tall on the site of The Voortrekker Monument and Nature Reserve. Completed in 1941 this granite column represents the obelisk erected in 1922 at Weenen 'the place of weeping' in KwaZulu Natal (Umgungundlovo).
This is the place where Voortrekker leader Pier Retief together with more than 70 of his fellow Afrikaaner trekkers were massacred on the 6th of February 1938.
Piet Retief attempted to enter peaceful negotiations with Zulu King Dingane, Retief entered Dingane's kraal (hut) to obtain a grant for land for the Voortrekker settlement. What was falsely presented as a friendly welcome was cut by a sudden command from Dingane to attack.
Women, children and servants sleeping in the waiting wagons were slain together with the men leaving history's stain in the form of a historic bloody body count on the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains.
