About The Bioscope
Independent cinema is given a new face in the form of The Bioscope. It is aptly positioned in the heart of the City of Gold, Johannesburg, where there is a constant buzz and a focus on all things cultural and socially relevant.
The Bioscope is situated in downtown Johannesburg, the capital city of the Gauteng Province and the launching pad for millions of international tourists. Its location means that the people it attracts are as diverse as the Rainbow Nation itself, lending it a fabulously cosmopolitan feel.
The Bioscope is able to accommodate 62 people, and boasts modern, comfy chairs that invite viewers to sit back, relax, and enjoy cinema in style. There is a high definition projector so that the picture is of the best possible quality, and the sound is excellent. Thanks to years of relationship building, The Bioscope has valuable connections with local and international film distributors, and is able to show some fabulous cinematic productions that are not always available in South Africa. For this reason, it is also a popular venue for events; such as workshops, awards evenings, and special screenings. Its independent status means that The Bioscope can screen risqué films that have not been well received by the mass market, but that make interesting social commentary or challenge strongly entrenched beliefs.
The outdoor cinema is another feature of this movie house with a difference. Comfortable bean bags are scattered on the rooftop so that viewers can enjoy their experience under the stars. The warm South African summer evenings create an ideal ambience in which to relax and indulge in something completely different.
There are also live performances hosted here from time to time to add another dimension to the cinema's offering.
When visiting South Africa, consider getting to know the country and its talents from a new perspective when you explore the world of art and cinema at The Bioscope.
