The rustic charm of the Culinary Table may take some by surprise, considering that this bakery, deli and restaurant is located in the busy area of Lanseria in Johannesburg, near Randburg and Sandton. However, it is an oasis in which fresh ingredients are of utmost importance and the abundance of the garden celebrated in true culinary appreciation.

The Culinary Table is equipped with its own Kitchen Garden, which offers fresh herbs, young fruit trees and a range of organic veggies that are taken directly from the ground and into the kitchen. Goods are harvested every day, which makes for a dynamic menu that changes regularly to incorporate what is available, particularly in terms of seasonality. All of the produce is free of pesticides, and actually promote biodiversity by attracting birds and insects.

The free range meats are a major draw card as they are free of antibiotics, hormones and any other dangerous chemicals. The Culinary Table sources all of its meats from local farmers that care about their animals and the meat that they supply. The butchery is done in-house to ensure that everything adheres to the standards of the Culinary Table. Steaks, sausages, burgers and poultry are all on offer for the hungry and discerning diner.

The deli and bakery are a must. The deli is stocked to the brim with cheeses, meats, patés, preserves and irresistible breads and pastries. The cured meats include imported goods; like hams, Jamòn Serrano, Bellota pata negra, acorn-fed speck, lonzino, pancetta and salamis.

The menu is impressive and comprehensive. Some favourite breakfasts are the homemade granola with honey toasted oats, Brazil, macadamia and pecan nuts, toasted coconut, and almonds served with yoghurt parfait and seasonal fruit; scrambled egg with line-caught poached smoked haddock; and the three-egg omelette with fresh goat's milk cheese and confit tomatoes. For heartier meals, try the smoked duck breast salad, pork tenderloin, prawn risotto or one of the meat and cheese platters. The comprehensive wine list includes many labels from South Africa, as well as craft beers and ciders (including pear and cloudy apple ciders).
