Barker's Chalet is a huge overhang with a certain appeal because it overlooks a wonderful wooded gorge within which runs a stream that becomes perfect for swimming during summer.

The overhang is thus not only shaded and well sheltered from the elements, but also picturesque, and a wonderful space in which to spend time with little ones (you can even use Barker's as your destination, although it sleeps only five comfortably).

The sleeping area whilst dusty is fairly level and smooth. A few river pools lie not far upstream in summer that are perfect for little ones.

However, because it is so close to Cathedral Peak hotel, the traffic through the area is high and you will get little privacy during the day. And the views from the overhang are nonexistent, you will need to venture forth.

The route follows the path that leads to the trout dam. Those heading to Sherman's cave need to keep a look out for a split in the trail, but if you continue on the path it leads to Barker's Chalet.

Barker's Chalet is on the Little 'Berg and from here many hikers begin the summit of Cathedral Peak, returning via the same route to overnight at Barker's again.
