About Durban Muthi Market
Enjoy the sights, smells and sounds of the Durban Muthi Market and get a feeling of mystery and wonder while you peruse the market stalls. Immerse yourself into a world of traditional African healing and discover ancient remedies and insights from the ancestors.
Meet with anyone of the Sangomas who will throw a collection of bones, seeds, shells or charms onto a mat. The way they land is controlled by the ancestors and the Sangoma will interpret what this means and prescribe a remedy.
The herbalist, otherwise known as the Inyanga can offer potions, medicines and other treatments for a number of ailments. You can purchase a number of other goods or ingredients at the market such as snake skins, crocodile teeth, plants, bird claws, powders, knobkerries or talismans. If you want to learn more about what is being made at the stalls it is advisable to bring along a Zulu speaking guide as many vendors are not fluent in English.
