The Gwahumbe Reserve is an absolutely stunning retreat in the midst of Mid Illovo, which is conveniently situated just an hour from Durban and 45 minutes from Pietermaritzburg.

The reserve is home to an amazing array of wildlife, and is a popular spots for annual family holidays, corporate teambuilding or romantic getaways. However, one does not have to spend the night to enjoy the fun and excitement of Gwahumbe, as there are plenty of things to do and see for day visitors too.

Gwahumbe is open from 07h00 to sundown for those wanting to experience the reserve with their own vehicles. Game drives are always rewarding and memorable, and can be undertaken with a 4x4 vehicle or a 2x4 with diff lock. Look out for hippo, rhino, zebra, giraffe and a variety of different antelope (including nyala, impala, kudu, eland and wildebeest), as well as many different bird species (in fact, around 180 different species have been recorded here).

There are several trails for guided or non-guided walks through the reserve. These are rewarding as visitors get to see the beauty and diversity of KwaZulu-Natal at a comfortable pace and with the sweet scent of the bushveld surrounding them.

The trails are also great for trail running and mountain biking, thanks to the combination of their being both rugged and well structured. This makes Gwahumbe the perfect option for visitors to the area that are looking for a safe, pretty setting in which to maintain their fitness.

Fishing is another popular activity within the borders of the reserve, due to its natural prettiness and its ample supply of fish.

These and other activities all make Gwahumbe an ideal day trip for team building initiatives or family outings. Because it is located just a short drive from major cities like Durban, it is particularly accessible.
