The Karkloof Crane and Conservation Centre is an exquisite natural resource in the heart of the scenic South African province of KwaZulu-Natal. While it offers visitors plenty of beautiful vistas and variety, it is, essentially, an attraction for bird-lovers and avian enthusiasts.

Guided walks through Karkloof allow visitors to spot an impressive array of bird species. Significantly, the centre is home to all three of the crane species that can be found in this country (the Wattled Crane, Blue Crane and Grey Crowned Crane). In addition, visitors can expect to see Red-knobbed Coots, Little Grebes, African Fish Eagles, South African Shelducks, Southern Pochards, African Marsh Harriers, White-faced Ducks, Jackal Buzzards, African Harrier-Hawks, Steppe Buzzards, Black-headed Herons, Giant Kingfishers, Black Crakes, Lesser Kestrels, Bald Ibises and the Greater Striped Swallows.

There are two bird hides in the centre, which invite guests to take some time out to enjoy the tranquillity of the countryside as they watch these fascinating bird species in their natural habitats. These also make for excellent spots from which to take stunning photographs.

The Karkloof Crane and Conservation Centre is committed to ecotourism; educating and raising awareness among members of the public from all over the world. There is an interpretive facility, which is an important part of the ecotourism aspect of the facility.
